This program equips caregivers with sensory tools and play-based strategies to help manage children's trauma responses effectively. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further tested our resilience, prompting us to advocate fiercely for caregivers' needs during unprecedented times, enhancing our virtual support offerings to maintain continuity of care. In the ever-expanding and growing community of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, where nearly 400+ children navigate the complexities of foster care, we at Foster Village Charlotte stand as a beacon of support and hope. Established to address the tangled web of challenges these children and their families face, our mission is rooted in untangling critical issues such as insufficient resources, isolation, and fragmented information.

We also found out that our foster daughter’s biological brother was born and needed a home. But then, during a court meeting, the judge decided that the baby would live with an aunt and uncle. Once we did, I couldn’t unhear or unsee what I had seen and heard. We finished classes and home inspections, then got a phone call saying we could start hearing about kids soon.

Empower generations of vulnerable families to overcome adversity.

We taught together at Merry Oaks Elementary for a couple of years. It wasn’t easy—we worked 80-hour weeks—but we loved those kids and families so much. Helping foster families and children by creating a village of support in the Charlotte area. You pick up a phone call in the middle of a work day to learn that a child needs you to open your home. You must quickly evaluate your life and decide whether to accept the placement with limited information about the child and the trauma they’ve experienced. You’re asked to come get the child immediately, unsure of whether the child will be with you 2 hours, 2 days, or 2 years. Even with the limited information, you say yes and go to meet the child. You’re rooting for the parents, but also knowing you’re next in line.

All caregivers are welcome to attend and we are able to provide credit hours toward re-licensing. FVC also hosts informal gatherings, Parents Night Out and social/play groups. Within 48 hours, FVC provides a week’s worth of all new essential and comfort items to ensure children have what they need. When caregivers say yes to keeping siblings together, FVC provides larger necessities to ensure each child has a comfortable first night sleep.

They provide resources such as welcome packs, funded trainings, support groups, and classes to help ensure a healthy transition for children in crisis. This is why we are proud to support Foster Village Charlotte and their mission. Part of their success, Santoro believes, comes from Foster Village’s reliance on its five staff members, all of whom have fostered children themselves. Santoro has four children, ages 10, 8, 6, and 4; she adopted the younger two.

Our volunteer program offers a variety of practical opportunities to get involved and support families in practical ways that make a tangible difference in their foster care journey. Imagine you are the child again and you have a birthday coming up. It's been almost a year since you've been living with your foster family and although you are bonding with them you are struggling with your longing to be with your parents. It's been almost a year since you've been in a home environment and you ache for being in "limbo." But then you learn your party is at the FVC Resource Center and the invitation includes both families.

Work to grow part-time staff roles into full-time roles, increasing FVC's capacity for program implementation, fund development and operational fidelity. FVC recognizes that capacity-building requires leadership at the helm. We have operated on a small scale team with limited compensation for co-directors so that we could increase the number of staff on our team in the future.

I would have loved for my (foster) children’s father to have access to a home-like setting like our current resource center in the Oakhurst neighborhood. We hope to open a larger resource center so we can provide more intentional programming around the foster and biological family on their road home. When Raeya was 6 months old, we both left teaching. I took a job at Watershed, working in the children’s program. During that time, I said to Tony, “Let’s do foster care.” Looking back, that did not feel like the right time to start something new. Tony was starting his business, I was in a new job, we had little kids.
